WOT Adv 296 - Vaid among Shadows

Vaid wandered from street to street, staying in the shadows. Whenever he stopped, he could see the charred bodies of those men on the backs of his eyes. So he kept moving. Looking. Wandering. He knew that he had to do something. There must be someone who needed help.
Gumbling, he reached into his pouch, opening his small bag of dried backroot. The strong smell wafted around him like the familiar embrace of an old friend. He studied it for a moment, slipped some in his mouth, and continued on.
Vaid wandered aimlessly through the town. Not being overly anxious to answer questions, he hunkered down in the shadows now and then to let the occasional duo of guards pass by.
He had stopped at a tavern, hoping to get some ale, perhaps, but it was locked up tighter than a prison. No one came to the door, no matter his banging.

Eventually, he wandered through Arandi Square, the city's central plaza, past silent shops, past rats that scurried away under foot and down dark alleys. His bundle slung over his shoulder, he was unsure of where to go or what to do. Perhaps he should find another inn? Perhaps just leave town altogether? He sighed and kept walking.

It was then that he noticed movement. Movement of someone trying to move slyly. Two forms, cloaked and hooded, darted around the corner and out of sight and Vaid thought he heard perhaps, for an instant, a muffled shout of alarm that was swallowed by a gust of wind. Or perhaps it was just his imagination.
